SCS Celebrates 2007 Graduating Students

The School of Christian Studies honored eight graduates Thursday, May 17, 2007.
Five students completed the Certificate in Ministry and Christian Leadership, and one student graduated with honors with a BA in Christian Studies. The Certificate and Bachelors degree programs at SCS are offered through Howard Payne University.
Two students earned Master of Divinity degrees, granted by Logsdon Seminary. Both seminary students received special awards: Dexter Brown received the SCS Chapel Speaker Award, and Carol Lindquist received the Logsdon Seminary Graduate Achievement Award.
SCS presented Certificate students with a copy of Working the Angles: The Shape of Pastoral Ministry by Eugene H. Peterson. Undergraduate student Edwin Mickley received a copy of A Work of the Heart: Understanding How God Shapes Spiritual Leaders by Reggie McNeal. Seminary students received a copy of Pastoral Care by Gregory the Great.
Families, friends, fellow students, administration, faculty, staff, trustees, and other friends of SCS gathered to recognize the commitment made by these students in pursuit of theological education.
Two SCS faculty members who completed their terminal degrees in 2006-2007 were also honored by President Celelli at the celebration. Dr. Doug Jackson earned a Doctorate in Ministry from Truett Seminary in December, 2006. Dr. Marshall Johnston completed a PhD in Church-State Studies from Baylor University in May, 2007.
Current undergraduate student Kellie Rogers led the congregational hymn, accompanied by Logsdon student Jonathan Leftwich. Dr. Ken Bradshaw, SCS President Emeritus, brought the invocation, and current Chair of the Board of Trustees, Jeanette Gordon, concluded the evening in prayer.
2007 Certificate Students:
James Anaya was born in Karnes City, Texas, and currently resides here in Corpus Christi. He is married to Tammy, and they have two daughters, three sons, and four grandchildren. Currently James serves as Student Minister and Administrator at Travis Baptist Church. James plans to continue his theological education by pursuing a Bachelors degree through the School of Christian Studies.
Fermin Huerta was born in Blackfoot, Idaho. Fermin is married to Diana, and they have five children: Fermin III, Jay Isaac, Alyssa Marie, Edlin, and Jeremy. Fermin serves as pastor at New Life Christian Church in Premont. He plans on growing the congregation at New Life in the knowledge of God. Fermin’s primary goal is to continue in God’s will.
Enrique Quevedo was born in Mexico, where he lived until his family moved to Texas in 1970. Enrique now lives in Corpus Christi, with his wife Emma. Currently, Enrique serves as the pastor for Iglesia Bautista Horeb in Corpus Christi. Enrique will continue his theological education by pursuing the Bachelor of Arts degree in Practical Ministry at the School of Christian Studies.
John David Rourk, Jr. also completed his Certificate program this year. John attends Lexington Baptist Church here in Corpus Christi, and he and his wife, Thelma, are working to develop a ministry to married couples. John and Thelma have two sons, Travis and Preston.
Philip Douglas Worley was born in Mobil, Alabama. Eventually, the military moved Philip and his family to Corpus Christi. Philip felt a calling from God to pursue theological education, and eventually, Philip plans to minister as a Christian counselor. Philip plans to continue his education in Corpus Christi, seeking a bachelors degree.
2007 Undergraduate Student:
Ed Mickley was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Donna, have been married for 24 years, and they have one daughter, one son, and six grandchildren. Ed began taking courses in Christian Studies from a desire to learn more about the Bible. In the course of his study, he began to experience a call to the ministry, specifically in the area of Christian education or public relations. Ed currently assists in marketing and promoting churches, and he attends Calallen Baptist Church where he teaches Sunday School. Ed has already begun to pursue the Master of Divinity degree through the School of Christian Studies.
2007 Graduate Students:
Dexter Brown completed his Master of Divinity degree in the Summer of 2006. Dexter is a chaplain for Vista Care Hospice in San Antonio. He attends the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where he is involved in nursing home ministry, Sunday school, and other areas of service.
Carol Lindquist completed her Masters of Divinity degree in May 2007. Carol plans to continue serving the Lord as minister of education at Calallen Baptist Church in Corpus Christi.
